‘Bird and Its Shadow’ sculpture was designed for the facade of the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Taksim, symbolizing the convergence of various narratives central to Erol’s work. The sculpture prominently features hands, a recurring motif in Erol’s designs, intertwined in a manner he describes as a ‘dance.’ It plays with the concept of the invisible, as the sculpture’s shadow is fully revealed only when illuminated by sunlight from a specific angle. Inspired by the traditional shadow plays brought by the Turks from China and Central Asia in the 11th century, the work emphasizes Istanbul's historic role as a bridge between East and West.
