ZERRE SCULPTURE
About Project
In 2021, Aykut Erol proposed Zerre, a light and simple artwork, for a competition organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This piece aimed to commemorate Mimar Sinan by combining the world’s largest optical glass sphere with Augmented Reality. Erol chose light, shadow, and reflections as the primary materials to modestly celebrate the genius of Mimar Sinan. The glass sphere was designed to be located in Üsküdar without obstructing the view. Perched on a pedestal of circular forms, the glass sphere symbolizes the waves created by falling water droplets. When viewed closely, this sphere takes the shape of a water drop, creating a lens effect that inverts everything reflected. The work will be made from glass waste and will generate the energy needed to illuminate its surroundings.
